What is TCM?

Traditional Chinese medicine, TCM is an ancient natural system of healing, developed and used in China for over five thousand years. It is of equal rank with that of Western Medicine in China. However there is vast difference between the two systems both in theory and practice. TCM places greater emphasis on the unity of the human body. TCM not only addresses symptoms, but looks beyond the symptoms to the causes of illnesses. Producing good remedy safely without or less side effects, TCM is now widely accepted throughout the world.

There are two basic components in TCM - Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine.

What is Acupuncture?
It is a clinical technique which is based on TCM theory. Objective scientific evidence shows that acupuncture had a physical basis. The meridians exist throughout the human body are associated with the central nerve system. These acupuncture meridians are the pathway for “Qi” or energy power circulation throughout the body. These meridians act as a network and are in contact with each other in the body. This creates the balance of physiological functions of the body. TCM calls this the Yin and Yang balance. Many illnesses are associated with the upset of balance in the Yin and Yang.

There are over 350 points located in the Meridians. TCM doctors use sterilized needles to stimulate these acupuncture points, so the "Qi" follows the meridians to restore the balance of the Yin and Yang, hence health and energy can be regained. Acupuncture is a safe therapy with virtually no side effects. The thin needles are sterilized according to surgical standards. When administered by a skilled and experienced practitioner, no real pain is felt when the needle enters the skin. However, some tingling or heaviness maybe felt momentarily when the needle reaches the correct acupuncture point. This indicates the "Qi" has been stimulated. After an acupuncture treatment, most people feel rested, relaxed and often energized.

What is Chinese herbal medicine?
The Chinese herbs are derived only from natural substances. According to the record of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, there are over three thousand different kinds of herbs in China. Chinese herbal medicine is a major component of health care in China.

Herbs are used by TCM doctors similar to medications or prescriptions from doctors in Western Medicine. Chinese herbs are used to balance the Yin and yang functions of the body in relationship to its environments both the inner and the outer.

Consequently, they restore the physiological functions of the body and promote health by addressing the causes of the illnesses, not just treating the symptoms.

Since herbs are used in TCM as medicine, you can only get the prescription after a physical examination and diagnosis from a qualified and experienced TCM doctor. The prescription consisting 8 or more kinds of herbs in correct proportions is usually issued as according to the diagnosis of the individuals.

During the course of treatment, the doctor follows the patient’s situation, adjusting the prescription as needed until the illness is cured.

Besides acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, there are other treatments to speed up the recovery of illnesses such as massage, cupping, moxibustion and etc. Experienced TCM doctors will monitor patient’s situation and select suitable therapies to treat the illnesses.
